Cheers Meal: The Giesinger Bräustüberl is running out of cooking oil.

That's why the restaurant now simply lets you pay for its beer with oil.

Munich - Everyone is currently familiar with the picture of empty sunflower and rapeseed oil shelves in supermarkets.

The Giesinger Bräustüberl is similar.

"We actually need more than we get from the supplier," says restaurant manager Erik Hoffmann.

The solution?

The Bräustüberl now exchanges beer for oil.

Since the beginning of July, people have been coming to the Bräustüberl almost every day, bringing two things with them: thirst and cooking oil.

They give the latter to Hoffmann.

The innkeeper will quench your thirst.

Because for every liter of oil, the guests get either two pints or one pint of beer.

Giesinger Bräu: Beer can be paid for with oil - guests find the idea funny

Brewery boss Steffen Marx came up with the idea of accepting oil as a means of payment.

"He didn't have any oil, but beer," says Hoffmann.

So why not offer a barter deal?

And so the Giesinger Bräu quickly launched an appeal on social media such as Facebook - and promptly hit the bull's eye.

"The guests think it's funny that they can pay for their beer with oil," says Thomas Doriath, spokesman for the Giesinger Bräu.

For the restaurant, on the other hand, the background is not quite as funny.

The chefs need around 300 liters of oil to prepare schnitzel, fries or other deep-fried dishes – every week.

There are hardly any alternatives to cooking oil.

"Olive oil is not suitable," explains Doriath.

If you heat it too much, it's not just the taste that suffers.

The substance acrolein, which is suspected of being carcinogenic, can even form.

Munich: The campaign runs until July 17th

You can pay for your beer with oil in the Bräustüberl until July 17th.

There are a few things to keep in mind: As already mentioned, it must be oil that is suitable for frying - preferably sunflower or rapeseed oil.

It should also be durable for some time.

The guests have already exchanged around 230 liters of oil for the same amount of beer.

"Our goal is 500 liters so that we are well prepared by the end of the year," says Hoffmann.
